Lib Dem MPs Welcome Boost to Cornish Economy11.26.55am GMT Tue 12th Dec 2006
The five-strong team of Liberal Democrat MPs for Cornwall today (Monday) welcomed funding allocated by the South West Regional Development Agency (RDA), which will boost the Cornish economy by some £20m. The RDA is to fund two projects, one which will provide £8m of support for Newquay and the other to fund £12.6m for much-need regeneration in St Austell. Commenting, North Cornwall MP, Dan Rogerson said: "We're obviously delighted that the RDA has stepped in to support developments at Newquay Airport, which is of critical importance to Cornwall's economy. "Along with the sleeper train service - which Liberal Democrats fought a successful campaign to save this year - it is a vital link between Cornwall and the rest of Britain. "I'm delighted that the RDA is committed to working with the County Council and the aviation authorities to make the airport carbon neutral." "In addition, the RDA are right to note that some 1000 jobs will be safeguarded by the Newquay investment and a further 2000 could be created as the airport expands. Matthew Taylor, MP for Truro and St Austell added: "This is brilliant news, and what is important now is to make sure that the money is spent wisely. The key goal of St Austell's regeneration process must be the creation of jobs to ensure a robust local economy, on which the community can thrive, and which can contribute to the growth and success of the county as a whole. "I am doing everything I can to help create jobs in the area, including a meeting next month with Transport Ministers to press for proposed works to the A391 which could also create significant employment opportunities. We welcome the RDA's investment as a major element in completing regeneration and enabling St Austell to fulfil its potential as a major town in the South West."
